10 Health Benefits of Coffee

Coffee has been a popular drink since the Middle Ages. From then until now, the health benefits of coffee have been hotly debated. However, science has now come squarely down on the side of health benefits. Following are 10 benefits — read to the end to see how Jordan Ranch can pour you along the way to better living one coffee cup at a time.

Energizes Your Mind

Caffeine, the main active ingredient in coffee, doesn’t just jumpstart your day. It stimulates your nervous system by blocking the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine. When this happens, other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine increase. Your neurons fire faster. The end result — according to many studies — is that your memory, energy levels and reaction times all increase

Gets You Ready to Exercise

Coffee can get us ready to hit the gym. Just one cup raises epinephrine (adrenaline) levels in your blood. Raised adrenaline levels prepare your body for intense physical exertion like running for 45 minutes on the treadmill. Drinking a cup of coffee approximately 30 minutes before a workout could improve your physical performance by 11 to 12 percent.

It’s a Fat Burner

A 2020 study conducted by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that drinking four cups of coffee per day can reduce body fat by 4 percent.

May Lower Risk of Diabetes 2

Drinking coffee may lower your risk of diabetes by 22 percent but you have to drink six cups. That’s a lot of coffee! Drinking decaffeinated coffee lowers the risk by 6 percent. Scientists aren’t sure why, but it may be related to the fact that coffee increases your metabolic rate.

Reduce Risk of Neurodegenerative Conditions

You may be at less risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as

Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s. Several studies indicate that drinking three to five cups a day can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s or dementia by 65 percent. Coffee lowers inflammation, which is a contributor to the diseases. A study in 2018 showed that drinking four cups a day resulted in a fivefold reduction in getting Parkinson’s.

Protects Your Liver

Just one cup of coffee per day can reduce your chances of getting liver cancer, cirrhosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Increase your consumption to 2 cups per day and your risk for liver cancer decreases by 43 percent.

May Lower Risk of Certain Other Types of Cancer

Liver cancer isn’t the only type of cancer you can lower your risk for with a cup of joe. Coffee seems to lower your risk of contracting colon, endometrial and skin cancer as long as you drink three to five cups per day.

May Lower Your Risk of Stroke and Heart Disease

At one time it was thought that drinking coffee raised blood pressure and your chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Turns out the culprit was smoking cigarettes, which is often paired with a morning cup of coffee. Coffee can actually lower your risk because caffeine seems to lower the risk of heart rhythm disturbances.

May Make You Happier

Coffee doesn’t just keep your body healthy; it may keep your emotions healthy, as well. Studies indicate that as coffee consumption increases, the risk of depression decreases. This could be related to coffee being a stimulant, but more studies are needed.

May Help You Live Longer

Coffee can be part of a healthy diet and even lower your overall risk of premature death. A 2008 study of people ages 18 to 24 found that drinking coffee lowered the risk of premature death in men by 20 percent and women by 26 percent.
